  • Walworth County Community Garden April 3, 2012
Have you been thinking about growing your own produce but have never grown vegetables before?  Do you want to grow your own food and flowers but don’t have the space?  Here is your chance!  Educators from the University of Wisconsin-Extension have joined together withWalworthCountyto provide the fourth consecutive year of theWalworthCountycommunity garden project.  Community gardens provide common ground for people to grow plants, build strong communities, and provide the space needed for a garden.  Some benefits of gardening include raising fresh produce and saving money, learning new gardening skills, getting exercise and unwinding.   Christine Regester, UW-Extension Horticulture Educator says “A community garden offers people of all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels a chance to grow and learn together.  Growing your own vegetables can save money and it gives a sense of security in knowing where your food comes from.  This year we are partnering with other organizations acrossWalworthCountyto help develop and implement more community gardens throughout our local communities”. The Walworth County Community Gardens are located on the south side of County Road NN, just west of the new Lakeland School and across the street from the Lakeland Health Care Center.  Each gardener will have a choice of four different plot sizes to rent: 20 ft. x 30 ft. for $35 20 ft. x 20 ft. for $25 10 ft. x 10 ft. for $15 raised beds for $10.  The 55 garden plots will be available on a first come first serve basis.   Garden plots will be tilled prior to the opening weekend.  Weather permitting the garden will be open approximately Friday, May 4.  The University of Wisconsin-Extension staff will have programs, demonstrations, and updates to support gardeners throughout the growing season.  The land for the Walworth County Community Gardens is generously provided by Walworth County.  We are anticipating another very successful year in the garden!  For more information on this garden or to help find a community garden near you please visit http://walworth.uwex.edu/horticulture/community-garden/ or call the UW-Extension office at (262) 741-4951.

  • Inventory of MGV Therapeutic Horticulture Projects March 14, 2012
What are you doing to help connect individuals to the garden in order to improve their well-being? Master Gardener Volunteers are playing a larger role in the engagement of individuals and groups in gardening activities.  As discussed in the Winter 2012 Level 2 training, Horticulture-History & Health, this engagement can have an impact on people's well-being. The array of programs is immense!  Your program can be a multi-layered, progressive program, such as GreenWorks, in which MGVs mentor young adults with cognitive disabilities to gain employment in the green industry.  Your program may be a vegetable garden in partnership with the local school.  Your project may be keeping the local park nice and neat so visitors have a place to relax and engage in nature. We want to know what you are doing! The inventory will be available to all MGVs in order to share ideas and experience as they begin to incorporate the principles and practices of therapeutic horticulture into their volunteerism.
